Both statements highlight the value of well managed educational visits and activities . They give welcome recognition to the value of reducing bureaucracy and using a sensible and proportionate approach to the planning and conduct of school trips. These sentiments are consistent with current BMBC guidance and procedures.
They also provide a clear reminder that health and safety law, particularly the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and the common law duty of care, continue to apply to school trips. It is therefore important to continue to follow the advice and guidance of your employer as the statutory duty holder in this field.
You will already be aware that current BMBC guidance for educational visits and activities is contained in the most recent edition of the LA’s guidance, dated March 2011 and entitled Organising Visits & Journeys: Educational Visits & Outdoor Activities Guidelines.
