Independent Travel Generic Risk Assessment

Very occasionally, some visit leaders consider the possibility of pupils travelling independently to a visit venue, for example for a particular sports fixture or local event.

This clearly requires very careful consideration, informed judgement, sound risk management, close monitoring and informed consent of parents and the school management. The school, visit leaders and supervising staff have a clear duty of care to safeguard the wellbeing of pupils and young people in their care.

There is now a generic risk assessment available which provides a starting point for considering whether this is appropriate for a particular group or individuals.

It is available on the Evolve online visits system under Guidance & Resources>Forms>Generic Risk Assessments>Independent Travel. There is also a copy available here.

Remember, generic risk assessments act as a starting point only. They must be adapted to take into account the specific hazards and risks associated with any particular visit for which they are being used.
