Forest Schools

Many schools and settings across Barnsley have been finding out more about the principles of the Forest Schools approach to outdoor learning. As a result they have been actively developing outdoor learning areas for children to explore and spend much more time outdoors.

A Forest School site has been established at Silverwood Scout Camp, Silkstone for groups of children to visit and have a true Forest School experience. Carlton Primary School were the first school to visit Silverwood on a regular basis with early years children, using it as part of its whole school development of outdoor learning.

There is a growing interest in this way of working in the outdoor environment, presenting children with adventure and challenge and allowing them to make their own decisions and learn to manage their own safety.

The LA arranges a variety of training opportunities for schools and settings to be able to develop their own knowledge of working with children in the outdoors in a variety of ways through Forest Schools.

The principles of the Forest Schools approach to outdoor learning is now becoming established in Barnsley. If your school would like to get involved, or for more information, contact: Julie Smith, Forest School Practitioner/Co-ordinator tel: 07795258977 email:, EYFS Team.
