Youth Hostels Association (YHA)

As part of the LA’s strategy to extend the range of outdoor learning opportunities available to schools and other settings, special discounts are available to Barnsley groups using the YHA.

The YHA is a charitable organisation, established in 1930, which operates over 200 youth hostels throughout England and Wales in a wide range of environments including countryside, cities, coastal locations and within the national parks. Their stated aim is:

’To help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, and appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities, particularly by providing Youth Hostels or other accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, recreation and education.’

In keeping with this, an agreement with YHA makes the following specific benefits available to Barnsley LA groups:

  • Free annual YHA membership
  • Specially arranged discounts at particular youth hostels (see information on Evolve in the News section)
  • Access to funding assistance through the Breaks 4 Kids scheme
  • Free bed and breakfast planning visits for 2 people
  • free leader place for every 10 full board participants
  • Sole use available in many hostels
  • Access to YHA educational packages linked to the national curriculum
  • Access to classrooms and self-led activity programmes
  • A flexible range of catering options to suit your needs, including catering for special dietary needs if notified in advance

More information is available direct from YHA at http://www.yha.org.uk or from Michael Sabin, YHA Groups Adviser, Tel: 01629 592705 Email: michaelsabin@yha.org.uk.
